Okanagan Area Info: If you're moving to the Okanagan from elsewhere in BC, there's some extra information below about the area to help you get settled.

New Residents of BC: Moving from outside the province to British Columbia adds a whole new layer of things to consider. The last section of this page has a number of new services you must register for and/or update as a new resident of the province.

BCHydro - Opening a BC Hydro account to get electrical service at your home or business takes just a few steps.

FortisBC - If your home or business has natural gas or electricity service installed and you need to open an account.

City Utilities - Usually covering water, sewer, garbage, and recycling, these services are typically billed quarterly or bi-monthly by the city your home is located in.

Electronics Recycling - If you have any electronics that you don't need anymore, please recycle them instead of throwing them out.

Mail Forwarding - If you didn't get to update your address with all of the places that send you mail, you may want to consider this Canada Post service.

Vernon Schools - Vernon has 5 secondary schools (grades 8-12, with one French Immersion School), and 14 elementary schools (grades K-7, including one unitrack French Immersion School for grades 1-7).

Dog Licensing - Under all city and regional district bylaws in the Okanagan, all dogs must wear an official licence, and this licence must be renewed annually.

Medical Services Plan (MSP) - Apply for mandatory public health insurance for British Columbians and their dependents.

Holidays in BC - The statutory holidays in BC may be different than they are in the province you're from.

Mobile Phone Number - Change your cell phone number to a local British Columbia number. Contact your cell phone provider by dialing 611 on your cell phone to complete this process.

Driver Licensing - Get a BC driver's licence at a local licencing branch.

BC Services Card - The photo identification alternative to a Driver's Licence.

Auto Insurance - There are two kinds of car insurance in BC: mandatory basic coverage through ICBC (a government body) and optional extended coverage, both of which are available from ICBC Autoplan brokers, or private insurance companies.

BC Property Taxes - When you own or lease a property or manufactured home in B.C., property taxes must be paid yearly for each property.
